Microsoft ends all its operations in Pakistan (Social Media )
Technology News: Microsoft has shut down all its operations in Pakistan after globally laying off 9000 employees. This big decision is not a corporate move; it highlights Pakistan's economic and political uncertainty. Not to forget the missed opportunities that have impacted the nation significantly. It is a known fact that Pakistan's economy is in a deep hole at the moment. The currency volatility, joblessness, diminished foreign reserves, and whatnot. After all these difficult times, global companies have begun to pull back or lessen their operations in the country.
Dr Arif Alvi, the former president of Pakistan, has stated about the ongoing economic tensions in the country. According to him, Microsoft leaving the nation has just piled on to the trouble. “Pakistan now spirals into a whirlpool of uncertainty. There is increasing joblessness, our talent is migrating abroad, and purchasing power has reduced,” Alvi took to X. He also told about an important conversation between Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella and Prime Minister Imran Khan regarding a major investment when Nadella had visited Pakistan in February 2022.
However, after Imran Khan's ejection, the plan didn't go as planned. “By October 2022, Microsoft chose Vietnam for its expansion, a decision in which they had initially favored Pakistan. The opportunity was lost,” Alvi wrote.
It is not just a symbolic departure. Microsoft was one of the leading technology firms with an office in Pakistan. Its departure creates a void in terms of international collaborations, talent development, and investment. Additionally, it strengthens the idea that Pakistan is no longer regarded as a reliable or important location for tech investment, which may discourage newcomers.
The tech professionals in Pakistan are obviously unhappy with the decision and have expressed their concern, "tech brain dead." Also, many capable professionals are opting to work in the Gulf countries, Europe, or America, which further increases the divide.
Microsoft has done a massive global 9000 layoffs in 2024-25. Although this was done as a part of cost-cutting measures, it has impacted global employment. Since Pakistan was always a minor market, a decision like this was always on the cards. The company decided to end its operations after 25 years in the nation.
